My Lucky Week

Wednesday, 03 Oct 2007

It’s only Wednesday and I’ve already had the luckiest week that I can remember in a while.

Sun X2100 Server

First, on Monday I released my new language project, Nu, and had thousands of visitors to my new site, Programming Nu. Of those, over 200 downloaded my binary installer, and so far I haven’t heard of any problems with installation or any of my examples. That binary installer was the scariest part of the release for me; I just figured out how to make it last Friday! There’s nearly 50 people in our new Google group, and there’s a small but sharp core of people pushing the boundaries of what can be done with Nu. I see a lot of improvements coming as we learn more about what it’s like to approach Nu for the first time.

Frequently Asked Questions about Nu

Wednesday, 03 Oct 2007

It’s been interesting to see all the discussion about Nu. Now I understand why professors and public speakers ask questioners to identify themselves. Anonymous comments seem a lot more hostile than ones that come with names attached.

Some common questions have come up and rather than get into the various threads, I’ve pulled them together into a Frequently Asked Questions about Nu page on Programming Nu.

Programming Nu

It is time to unleash Nu on the world. You can download Nu and read all about it at my new web site, Programming Nu. To all who waited, thanks for your patience.

I especially appreciate those who helped review and test a preview of Nu, notably Matt Mower, David Phillip Oster, Colin Barrett, and Patrick Thomson. I’m hoping to work more with each of them and with others who want to help me answer the question “What’s Nu?”

Today I started working on this year’s update of the Ruby on Rails application that we’re using to run our Los Altos FIRST Lego League tournaments.

The Buzz is my bag

Buzz Sling Bag

I just ordered this beautiful Buzz Sling Bag from Tom Bihn.

It looks like the perfect companion for Caltrain trips with my MacBook Pro.

Of course, I looked hard for a timbuk2 bag that I liked, but couldn’t find anything as tight and featured as the Buzz… so now, it’s “a TB for TB”.

Repost: Nu at the SF Ruby Meetup

Monday, 17 Sep 2007

A reminder: I’ll be giving a preview of Nu at the SF Ruby Meetup tomorrow night.

Since time is limited, it will mostly be a demo session. I’m planning to show some of the things that I did at C4 [1], talk a bit about my reasons for writing Nu, show a couple of small random examples, and then close with a fun multithreaded desktop app.

Thanks, Steve

Today you announced a $100 credit to all pre-discount iPhone buyers.

As a customer, that was a surprise that made me happy. As an investor, I like owning part of a company that makes that kind of investment. I like the price cut, too.

Now, on with the platform. Honestly, did you ever imagine NeXTSTEP running on a telephone?

Singularity Summit

Wednesday, 05 Sep 2007

I’ll be taking a break from hacking (and household chores) this weekend to attend the Singularity Summit in San Francisco. My new friend Steve Omohundro will be among the many acclaimed and interesting speakers. The subject is “the Singularity”, the point in time at which our machines and inventions become smarter than us.
